I was so pissed off because they could of made something amazing. They set up all these things, but then just ditch them and do jack shit.

Ok. So nobody's really going to see this, and this is a BS analogy, but this is my take on the movie. It's like going to an Al Yankovic concert. It's pretty good on its own, but if you do your homework it's great. Charlie talked in the video about the movie not having a plot and having a bunch of Hollywood in-jokes, but that's really not the case. The plot, while very loose, is there, and almost everything in the movie (while building up the 60's atmosphere) serves to heighten the sense of dread around the Sharon Tate murder. I went in knowing the timeline of the Manson stuff and all of that, so every time either of the main characters was at Rick's house, there was tension passively building up. Same with Cliff's trailer and the shit with pussycat and the movie ranch. Everything adds to the tension. When you go to a weird Al concert and you already know the songs and the setlist, it adds to the live atmosphere and makes the whole experience more fun. When you go to the theater to see Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and you already "know" the plot, it makes the whole movie more engaging and enjoyable. I'm not trying to say that Charlie (the moist one, not the Manson one) didn't know what happened with Sharon Tate / the Manson family, just that maybe he was going into it with the wrong mindset. In the video he said that he tried to get into the movie as much as possible and separate it from its maker, but that touch of reality from knowing the timeline beforehand really can make the difference between a "waste of 3 hours," and a really good movie.

*TL;DR Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is basically if the first scene of Inglorious Basterds was a movie*

claiming that there is no plot but then saying there’s a theme of coping with becoming increasingly irrelevant is self contradictory. there’s the plot right there, ricks struggle and coping with irrelevancy and losing his spark is definitely explored in the film. when he gets into the set of the cowboy film and discusses his role snatched by mcqueen, or talking to marabelle(the fiddle girl) about the easy breezy novel, he is choosing to focus on the negative and failing aspects of his career. After the event towards the end of the movie when rick is talking to jay sebring, he brags about his flamethrowing skills and his time on 14 knuckles. his career was in a good place again and he was comfortable. I guess what i’m trying to say here that not every plot is the ‘hero’s journey’ and a movie’s plot can be the exploration of the themes in the movie.

i don’t know what charlie is expecting from a movie literally titled ‘once upon a time in hollywood’ the plot lines don’t get resolved because it was a hopeful fantasy, not a true set of events. Tension is always meant to be climatic and dramatic, i don’t know why you would see a nearly 3 hour movie and not expect there to be tension collapse.

Honestly I think charlie exposes his lack of movie expierence with this. It's not always about a plot or characters being driven by anything. Character studies and just following characters through a pivotal moment in their lives can be amazing.

It's fine if you didn't like it honestly, but to say movies must always tell a 'story' or whatever vague jesture you're making here is silly. You limit art so heavily with something like that. We wouldn't have movies like Funny Games or Pink Flamingos if we stuck with what a 'film' must be or something like that. To say nothing was 'expierenced' or 'felt' with *once upon a time* however is just baffling. I was nearly moved to tears when DeCaprio nailed the evil villain scene. We've all had low points where a compliment even from a little girl can mean the world to us. Brad Pitts final line of 'I try' nearly made me cry too. Don't we all try? The fact that you were unable to engage purely on the characters terms is, if I can be 100% frank, a failing on your part. If I can be honest, I think you should explore films more.

A lot of people are slating Charlie because he doesn't like the movie for its lack of plot and the whole point was that it was realistic and breaks trends but honestly I have to agree with him.

For me a movie does need a strong plot because if I am going to pay to watch a movie you pay to see a story. I don't want to go and see real life because I can just live that or watch a documentary or something. Watching things just happen seems empty. But eh that's just my opinion

I have to ask though, how does Tarantino keep getting actors agree to work with him? He is a psychopathic arsehole! No pay check is worth the potential physical and mental damage from being near that monster

The whole point of the movie is subverting expectations: Tate doesn’t die although it seems she may, Cliff should have died st the ranch but he never does. Rick should have been shot by the Manson family when he yelled at them but doesn’t.

Completely disagree. There is s narrative which is based on the theme. There is clear character arc and everything has a purpose although it seems as though it initially does not. You’ve completely missed the point of the film.

Half of people don’t know about the real story though 😂. I think it was pretty good. It was supposed to be an alternate timeline for the Tate murders.

I don't know why other people don't get this, but this movie was formatted like an old western. Even with the literal juxtaposition of the tension at the ranch that was a former cowboy show set, which was shot for shot like the scene where a cowboy hero rolls into a town being run by outlaws. They literally show a thematically similar scene before it in the "movie within a movie" where the hero comes into town, talks with the boss with threatening subtext between them, gets in a fight where he easily beats one of the henchmen who tried causing shit, and rides off. They even did a thing with his stance while and camera angle while he fiddled with his keys in his hand, where it would be like a shot showing a cowboy's hand hovering over his holstered gun. Then the finale was the final shootout after all the building tension.

They show you clips of one character playing a cowboy in the movies, and then the other character being like a cowboy anti-hero in real life. People saying this movie had no structure or story, had no plot, was just a bunch of scene, it's just not the kind you're used to. You expected things to go one or another super obvious way and they didn't, but you didn't pay attention to where they showed they were actually going so they caught you by surprise. Even when they literally show you cowboy movie scenes of the same thing before they happen.

Not hating on you for not liking tarantino as a person, you're right there, but this movie was my jam.

I really enjoyed the whole movie but it's totally alright for Charlie to have his own opinion. It wasn't surprising though. Charlie seems to have a very traditional taste in movies and on his livestreams he sometimes comes across kind of ADHD so it's no wonder the slower pace wasn't to his liking.

I think the movie is about of course an alternative timeline for the Manson murder, but also the journey of a western actor who is trying to cope/change the fact that he is becoming our of style. His story of regaining relevancy. I loved the relationship between rick and cliff, one of my favorite supporting actor performances

Nothing is more interesting and exciting and brings me more joy watching like all of his stuff, and i cant count how many times ive seen each and every. But ignorance is bliss, but I wish you could keep it to yourself. I stopped watching your moist meter since i found out you like anime, I just cant trust any of your judgement of movies since its completely the opposite. I loved how even if you were getting a bit bored in anticipation, there was another scene ready after. It made me realise that this was the movie I’d hoped it would be but wouldn’t expect from Tarantino. It’s relaxing and it’s a beautifully shot way of showcasing some nostalgia for some and just beauty for others like me. The action toward the end would never have the impact it did if the movie were half the length. On the other hand. The trailers that were released implied a more action packed, manic movie, which I think could have been just as good if not better in my imagination, however I think this movie is just one that’s meant to be watched in a different way. Can’t blame Charlie for looking at all movies in the same lens, but I think you need to just sit back and accept this movie more so than to be on the edge of your seat in anticipation - and I blame that on the trailers mostly. I’m not even a big Tarantino buff even though I like all of his movies, they don’t all really stand out to me like something like a Fincher or Christopher Nolan movie. That being said I think personally this is one of his best by far, just not what a lot might expect. Btw mocking people for being pretentious doesn’t make you look any less pretentious yourself, you basically have to imply that you understand something better than everyone else and blanket everyone who disagrees as pretentious - thus ironically making you pretentious in doing so.

Also, Sharon Tate in the movie wasn’t meant to do much. *spoilers* this movie is dealing with Charles Manson and his cults murder of Sharon Tate in the 60s but *MAJOR SPOILER* Quinton Tarantino subverts expectations by not having the murder occur at all.

                                                                          • Gandalf

I have only seen about 3 movies from this guy and found to love this movie. Even if the “plot” didn’t do anything for you, you have to appreciate the beautiful and amazing shot cinematography. Was a joy to look at and experience a slice of foreign life.

I usually like movies like this too and was very excited to see it. There was a few fun scenes and really nice visuals but overall it just dragged and had no plot. Not sure why the ratings are so good.

                                                                                  • Mai Hawke

Rick was finding his identity, cliff was experiencing his own real life western, coming face to face with the inevitable black cloud which completely rattled cinema and even the late 60s for that matter. Sharon was resurrected, that scene where she watches herself in ‘the wrecking crew’ was beautiful and moving, she knows that the stardom she was groomed for didn’t necessarily work out but she embraces the future with a smile on her face. This film was character based and we saw them living in the moment. The whole film is a moment. The moment was stripped away in real life because at what happened at the Tate residence however Tarantino has brought it back with style, heart and a horrifically satisfying ending.

The actor wasn't supposed to strangle her at all, so no need for being gentle or not. Tarantino simply wasn't satisfied with what he had, so he asked to strangle her for real, only once. He did it all with her consent, so I don't see a problem.
