I didn't know people saw Blockbuster as a joke, I think most people miss them. I think the problem was returning movies, i still prefer a physical disc, so i go to redbox, but man i hate return them!

I never use Netflix it's boring, I want blockbusters they give a warm feeling. I couldn't image the day when machines would take over human jobs.

I'd actually say something different. I think it was US copyright law making rental copies different than commercial copies. (See on the label for commercial DVDs saying "Not for sale or rent.") Mom and pop video stores couldn't compete as easily, as rental copies would be $100-300 per tape, but retail copies were only $20 or so. Compounding it, Blockbuster had more leverage with studios to get really ideal licensing agreements for said rental copies. I view it as an example of if you try to monopolize an entire market, what ends up happening is instead of innovation and competition within the market, people just make an entirely different thing outside of the market, like Netflix did by mail, so even though they had the fees they had no brick and mortar costs like Blockbuster. As an example, Microsoft and Intel tried to monopolize PCs, and had great business for a decade or so, but the reaction was the smartphone and Android/iPhone wave, which brought Microsoft's competitor Apple basically back from the dead.

Streaming services will have a crisis in a few years with so many companies trying to lock their movies as exclusive; people will get tired of needing a dozen services. Someone will come up with a solution, streaming services as we know them will die and the cycle will start again

The fact that Netflix started with DVDs and didn't have an ageing catalogue of VHS tapes to replace probably played a small role, too?

I wasn't born when they were doing well, and they went bankrupt not too long after, so I can't say anything really.

How much time did a client spend at a Blockbuster store on average per visit? I would imagine 20 and 30 minutes.
I remember spending an hour or more there sometimes, going slowly through the shelves in search of obscure gems.
This was in Mexico, where the federal government subsidized the production of many foreign and classic films on videocassette, so there was always a section with Eisenstein and Tarkovsky, Kurosawa and Satyajit Ray.
Then in the regular genre sections there were many excellent films that had fallen through the cracks at the box office, titles like Go Tell The Spartans (war drama), The Conqueror Worm (horror drama) and The Hidden (sci fi thriller), I was always on the lookout for those. Then Netflix came along with a selection of DVDs that was beyond astonishing (I live in a border town, with a PO Box on the USA side for just this sort of purpose). Just when I thought I'd never find them, here they were: My Dinner With Andre, Battle Royale, Cobra Verde, Death In Venice, Hana-Bi, Women In Love... all selections that were difficult to obtain for a long time, then readily available, now difficult again... oh, and series like The Sopranos, Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica and Northern Exposure.

I remember as a kid wanting to work there as an adult not knowing what would happen to it... I do miss the experience of looking around and seeing what the new releases were and seeing all the candies and popcorn... Ugh I feel so old now.

What killed Blockbuster was DVD. In the VHS era, there was a thing called 'rental windows'. This was post-theatrical release, but before the title hit store shelves for public purchase. During the rental window, VHS titles cost around $100 per tape. Mom and pop stores would buy maybe a dozen if they were larger stores, but Blockbuster could buy tens of thousands of copies, getting them a Steep discount from the studios. They put thousands of small stores out of business because they could rent titles cheaper due to their discounts. Eventually (about 6 months later) the title would be publicly released. At that time the title would drop to around $20.

How DVD broke Blockbuster is that with DVD, the movie studios decided to eliminate the rental window. They wanted the public to accept this new disc format and they figured that titles coming out on DVD faster would gain the public interest and make people try out the new format. It worked. DVDs hit the market immediately with the $20 price point. Anyone could buy DVD, including rental stores, for $20/copy. It leveled the playing field that Blockbuster was using to eliminate all the competition. Netflix was able to take advantage of the DVD format. Blockbuster, the corporation that put thousands of small rental stores out of business using its deeper pockets, was put out of business by a cheaper product.
