I watched a bunch of practice and game film of two of the greatest shooters of all time and noted some of the significant differences between their mechanics/forms. You might be surprised just how different the two really are in how they shoot the basketball, despite the fact that they share several similarities as well. As always, I'm interested in what you have to say, so make sure you leave your thoughts in the comments below.

curry has his head cocked so he can see his target with his off eye. I do this too when I shoot so I noticed.

You give WAY to much detail.
Curry and Klay do the same 4 things that 98% of all great shooters do. 1. They both align their shooting hip and shoulder to the rim, there toes are turned to the 11 or 10 o'clock position. 2. They both dip the ball off catch for rhythm. 3. They both relax their shoulders back on the release and sweep their feet forward landing in a narrow stance. 4. On the release, the last finger to touch the ball more often then not is the pointer finger. All the other differences can be chalked up to how the body is connected together, like elbow flare.

way too much analytics! The delivery is 'MENTALLY' a shotput, not a catapult motion like 85% of NBA ballers. Identical arc angle on every delivery, the higher the height of the arc, the longer the distance. Steph taught this to Iguodala & Draymond...YouTube these 2 shooters..the shotput mechanics very EZ to see.

thumb flick is caused by shooting at a rim that is too high with a ball that is too heavy from a young age and using the off hand for additional strength. As the shooter gets older they adjust their shot but this is a left over problem from an early mechanical deficiency. I would argue that this would be impossible to "teach" as a mechanic and if applied incorrectly can add side spin to the ball. Klay has better technique, but no one has probably ever practiced shooting more than Steph and that is the difference.

Curry makes shooting look like art but Klay makes it look like a science.

I wonder if people know that Curry shot with 2 hands in Highschool. Dell made him rebuild his shot. That's why he wasn't recruited highly. That's why his jumper looks weird. He still holds on to those weird 2 hand mechanics.

If my jump shot was in 2k it would be
                                Lower base: Klay Thompson
Because I spread my legs like he does when i shoot

                                Upper base: Steph curry
Because he’s one of the few players in the league that leaves his hand hanging when he shoots, which is what I do, but I also leave my left hand in the same spot as I release so that the ball goes straight

Klay Thomson is so inconsistent. When he is hot, he is hot but when he is cold he is a terrible shooter. Curry can be a cold shooter also but he is mostly consistence.

i think its not about shooting form that defines a good shooter. you can shoot either ways as long as you got the touch and you're comfortable with it.

what makes Curry different is that he makes it so easy like shooting free throws not jumping too much.

There is no thumbflick ma friend.. the thumbflick dat ur talking about is not necessary to do that in purpose. It’s all about the triangle shooting form.. look at the shots of steph the ball always goes to the left side of the rim they r not centered im jst giving u a hint so dat u will understand as a consistent shooter u don’t wanna let the ball going to the right if your right handed when shooting.. try shooting free throws then if u miss the shot watch wer the ball goes if your right handed then mostly the ball goes to the right

There is a long tail on a tadpole that a frog doesn’t have. Thats the textbook examples and practices we all had to go through to become good at something.
They serve only as guidelines and give us a general understanding on how something should be done. Eventually the tail will go away and we will have learned to do it on our own.

Sorry to say that OP you probably got all the points wrong. Seeing that you are also learning the right shooting mechanics yourself, I suggest you edit your videos to avoid misleading others.

First, Steph does not have a thumb flick. He merely has longer guiding tunnel with his left hand. Compare his left thumb with that of Iverson or Irving then you will know. When you have longer guiding tunnel your whole left hand "flicks" so to speak. This is especially misleading when you continue to talk about how young players could thumb flick. You need to understand that the reason why young players tend to thumb flick is because they lack the shooting strength. It is a disguised form of two-hand shooting.

Secondly, the point you made about Steph having an outward flaring elbow is also wrong. Steph has a lower set point and more turn of his body; before shooting his right hip is already aligned to the basket. If you watch the actual frontal camera shot you will know. Plus, he further turns his whole body to get more extension and momentum, right before release. His right elbow is as straight as mechanically sound. The photo you took at 5:13 is from a SIDE camera angle and is therefore misleading. There is nothing "complex" about Steph's elbow. You want an example of elbow flare? Check out videos of LBJ before he modified his shooting stroke two years ago. Talking about Klay, he does not have much turn of his body when he lines up; he is more of a square shooter in terms of his body and the ball travels closer to the right shoulder therefore allowing his elbow to be more straight. Try these points yourself and you will instantly notice.

Thirdly, you talked a bit about their legs - that is in fact a big difference between these two. Granted they both have good skills to use their legs but Klay tends to shoot with his upper body strength more than Steph. That is also why Klay has a much leaner mid-range pull-up game whereas Steph excels in ultra-long range shooting. Your point about their difference in stances is actually a result of their different usage of leg power.

Lastly, you included a clip of your shooting practice. As a bit of advice, DO NOT get into the habit of jumping forward as you did in that clip, especially in competitive games, where overly aggressive defenders can easily destroy your ankle - you are basically jumping into the foot of a defender trying to block your three. Besides, your set point is way too low meaning diligent defenders could easily block your shots if they get familiar.

Apologize for the long paragraphs and blunt criticism but I hope OP as an avid basketball fan knows where I am coming from on these..

He had a more traditional style of shooting till his dad told him he wouldn’t survive the nba with that type of shooting. When he started working on the unorthodox shooting style, he missed a lot of his shots but he got better at it and now it’s one of the most powerful moves in the nba. This allows steph, with his shorter stature, to completely outplay way taller opponents when he combines it with his handles.
