Makes sense to me now how they killed my grandfather. They were pumping blood out of them but didn't notice they weren't putting the blood back in. ... I couldn't convince my parents to sue, cuz the don't believe in suing pos companies for some reason.

Great job Oliver. I would've added that home dialysis (either PD or home HD) are underutilized options.

I went through dialysis and it was a nightmare.. If it wasn't for medical, it would have cost me $67,000 a month for only dialysis..

I am so glad you are talking about this. Americans aren't really taking care of their health. So if you have cardiac problem or diabetes, you have a higher chance of getting kidney failure. Davita is basically killing their patients by not telling patients about transplants and just making money the longer the patients are on hemodialysis. They got sued, settled and even fired their employees that talk back or ask questions. I've been on dialysis with Davita and waiting for a kidney for ten years because the social worker said I'm not stable because I asked about my heath.

My dad has had 2 kidney transplants. For him, it's genetic. He went to DaVita his second time on dialysis and it wasn't the best care. I saw him work full time and when he was on dialysis, it sucked the life out of him. Please sign the back of your license and donate! I have my father today because of it.

See, for example, "The Undead," by Dick Teresi, that discusses the very real problem of knowing when, or if, a person is dead before they start removing the organs to be donated. The concept behind organ donation is great; the execution less so.

Years ago I heard it costs 20K for just one treatment.
Some doctors become doctors because they want to help people. Probably a lot of them, but companies they work for demand money making and have policy to do so. If you wonder why health insurance has gone up it is business. Doctors don't like it, I'll bet. Also, lawyers are in business. Frivolous lawsuits are a big reason. Juries need to understand that a lawyer will try to suggest it is all or none and juries have been known to realize that there is a case, but lawyers try to make it seem like the amount they are asking for is the only option. If you are ever a juror have the jury foreman write a note to the judge that we will settle for such and such amount. If you don't write that note there will never be an opportunity to be fair. To tell you the truth I would just deny the greed, but it is the juries job to determine whether there is a case or not. In the end I would send the note and if there is case I would do my job as a juror. Remember most of the time in a medical lawsuit the patient did not listen to the doctor. The case should be against the patient sometimes. The people get pain killers and take them reinjuring themselves, because they didn't listen to the doctor to stay of the foot or bed rest, what have you, are costing us money.
Plus there is no regulation on the prices medical industry can charge. I heard it costs 20K per treatment, because of the costs of the filters. I don't know if that is true, but if we had tax incentives to encourage them to charge a fair price we may all be able to afford health insurance. They don't see the big picture. Volume is their answer. They could make more money and help more people if they charged less and had more patients. Instead they want to over treat the ones with insurance.
They suggest you have to second mortgage your home to pay the bill. This is not true. You can set up a payment plan. I heard they are actually not allowed to charge you more than 8% of your income. I do not know if that is true, but I would tell them no and go to a state hospital.
Also, if we do have government insurance the government can limit their prices to what is fair. Don't put my job or your job on a shelf. Problem is, and I feel it is very enlightening, that the doctors that will accept medicare are rare. In Florida I believe there were three for the whole city. I think I am correct on this.
A good thing is that costs should come down now that established patients are now able to be seen by a specially trained nurse. I forgot what their title is, but their paycheck is less and that job can be on the "totem pole" and they can work themselves up to a position that pays better and learning a lot along the way. I only hope they will pass the savings on to us, if and only if medical services are needed.
We need laws to tell these companies not to call these unbalanced meals at restaurants balanced if they are not.

I'm not shocked at all by the healthcare industries described. At the end of the day it is a business and the people owning that business want as much money as they can get. Sure some owners are better than some, and they might do more for the patient, but a lot realize they can get away with less patient care and more saving at the end of the day. Behind the scenes multiple hospitals are constantly working on becoming more attractive, be it specializing in Trauma, Pediatrics, Burns, etc., to having the most up to date equipment (specialized scanning/imaging equipment), to even more beds available (regardless of understaffed employees).
